Synopsis
i see myself in you is a meditative doc, capturing vignettes of Brampton through the eyes of three current residents. Prabhmeet, an international student who goes to York University. Manpreet, a second gen Punjabi woman who moved to Brampton from Montreal. And Simran, a recently married newcomer from Jammu. Through interweaving multi language discourse, accompanied by 16mm black and white imagery, the film acts as a fleeting memory in an everchanging cultural pocket. Defiantly, the three 20 something’s paint a more holistic picture of what Brampton is today.
Director’s Statement
Leaning into non-hierarchal and DIY approaches to film, I took an analogue camera around my hometown with my family and friends. I talked to a lot of 1st and 2nd gen South Asians through the process. I wanted to make sure to tackle the inter-community issue that many newcomers face; discrimination from their own. With the film, my greatest desire is to help bridge the gap between South Asian newcomers and diasporic South Asians. Simran, Manpreet, and Prabhmeet help remind viewers of the everyday beauty and necessity of cultural pockets like Brampton. My wish is for that to translate into all of us cherishing our own special spaces more.
